WAVERLY, IA – It is often said in sports that the true test of character is determined by how a team reacts from a tough defeat.  Well, if that is the case the 2008 Rockford College men’s basketball team has a very bright future.  Coming off last night’s tough three point loss at the hands of Wartburg College, the Regents bounced back with a 90-80 victory over UW Stout in the consolation game of the Wartburg College Buzz Levick/ Pizza Ranch Tipoff Tournament to improve their record to 2-1.

The early stages of this game were very reminiscent of the first half in Friday’s loss.  Both teams spent much of the opening 20 minutes trying to feel each other out, but by halftime, the Regents found themselves in another 10 point hole, trailing 37-27 at the break.  Senior Rennell Taylor (Chicago, IL/ Hales Franciscan) led Rockford with 11 points going into halftime.

Also much like Friday, the Regents emerged from the locker room with a new sense of purpose.  The Blue Devil lead stayed around 10 points for the first four minutes of the stanza, then Rockford mounted a comeback, eventually taking the lead 53-51 with 12 minutes to play.  After two consecutive technical fouls on the Blue Devils bench, junior Danny Armelin (Gonzales, TX/ Gonzales) converted four free throws to extend the Regents cushion to 13 points.  Rockford maintained their advantage by hitting five of six free throws in the game’s final minutes.

Armelin came alive in the second half to the tune of 21 points, including 11-11 from the charity stripe.  Armelin finished the game with 27 points.  Taylor, who was named to the all-tournament team finished the game with 23 points and five assists.  Juniors Andrew Weber (Roscoe, IL/ Boylan) and Garrett Staniec (Glenview, IL/ Glenbrook South) combined for 22 points and 16 rebounds.

Rockford will open the home portion of their schedule on Wednesday, when they host the Beloit College Buccaneers.  The 7:00 p.m. game will be played in the Seaver Center.
