WAVERLY, IA – Last Saturday, the Rockford College men’s basketball team matched last year’s win total with a victory at Greenville College. On Friday, the Regents looked to extend that streak to two games as they the host at the Wartburg College Buzz Levick/ Pizza Ranch Tipoff Tournament in Waverly, IA. Though Rockford showed similar balance to last week’s victory, Rockford came up just short, falling to the host 72-69.
The majority of the game’s opening stanza saw both teams trying to feel each other out, with neither taking a lead greater than five points. With just over three minutes to play in the half, Wartburg extended their cushion to 10 points at 32-22. They maintained that cushion through the halftime break, leading 38-28. At the half, sophomore Taylor Stinson (Schiller Park, IL/ East Leyden) led Rockford with 10 points, including 3-6 from beyond the three-point arc. Junior Danny Armelin (Gonzales, TX/ Gonzales) added 10 for the Regents.
As the second half opened, Wartburg managed to push their lead to a game high 13 points, but the Regents would not go quietly. Rockford fought back, eventually taking the lead at 55-53 on an Armelin three-pointer with just over seven minutes to play. As both teams fought to gain momentum in the game’s final minutes, Wartburg pushed their lead to six with just under 30 seconds to play. But consecutive threes by senior Rennell Taylor (Chicago, IL/ Hales Franciscan) cut the deficit to one with 10 seconds to play. Two Wartburg free throws pushed the lead back to three, and with three seconds remaining, Armelin’s fourth three point attempt of the night fell short.
For the second consecutive game, Rockford got balanced scoring, with five players in double figures. Armelin led Rockford with 16 points and nine rebounds. Taylor and Stinson finished with 13 points each, while junior Garrett Staniec (Glenview, IL/ Glenbrook South) and sophomore Andrew Weber (Roscoe, IL/ Boylan) added 11 and 10 points, respectively. For the second consecutive game, senior Willie Howard (Milwaukee, WI/ Wisconsin Lutheran) grabbed five steals.
Rockford will face UW-Stout on Saturday at 6:00 p.m. in the tournament’s consolation game.
