ROCKFORD, IL – They may have a new coach and four new starters, but the Rockford College Regents women’s basketball team wasted no time in picking up their first victory of the 2008-09 season with Friday night’s 68-65 win over the visiting Ashford University Saints (4-3).

The game’s opening stanza was dominated by Regents’ freshman Britney Curry (Murrillville, IN/ Murrillville).  In the first 20 minutes of her collegiate career, the Regents’ rookie tallied 12 points on 6-13 shooting, with five rebounds and three steals.  Fellow frosh Erin Decker (Naperville, IL/ Waubonsie Valley) added eight points, while seniors Amber Lee (Rockford, IL/ Auburn) and Kim Nielsen (Evergreen Park, IL/ Evergreen Park) combined for 13 points and six rebounds.  Rockford used 50% shooting from the field and a plus eight rebounding margin to establish a 35-26 lead at the half.

Throught he first 10 minutes of the game’s second half, the Regents’ lead hovered between four and 10, but the Saints mounted a comeback midway through the half.  Ashford managed to take control of the game’s momentum, cutting the Rockford advantaged to two at 48-46.  Rockford immediately responded with a 5-0 run on a jumper by Lee and a three-pointer by sophomore Melissa Swaziek (Loves Park, IL/ Harlem).  With five minutes to play, the Saints took the lead from the Regents, their first advantage since the 16:26 mark of the first half.  It would be the final time the Saints controlled the scoreboard.

With the game fully undecided in the game’s final minute, Lee, one of Rockford’s two seniors, made the play biggest play of the game.  After a Saints lay-up that tie the score at 65 with 12 seconds to play, Regents first year coach Jessica Stanek called time out.  Lee receive the ball 21 feet out on the right wing.  With the clock winding down, Lee connected on her third three-pointer of the game with 3.6 seconds on the clock, giving Rockford and Stanek their first win of the season.

Lee led the Regents with 21 points off the bench, leading to a 29-6 Rockford advantage in bench scoring.  Curry finished with 18 points, five rebounds, and five steals.   Decker chipped in with 10 points.  Senior Nielsen led Rockford with 10 rebounds, in addition to her 9 points.
