ROCKFORD, IL – A new conference. Unfamiliar opponents. A young team. Each of three these three components contributed to the Regents disappointing 2-8 football season. The 2008 campaign was the inaugural season of football in the Northern Athletics Conference, meaning that this was the first time that Rockford faced most of the teams on their schedule. Though the overall record was not what Rockford expected, that did not stop the effort put forth by the Regents on the field. Those efforts were rewarded this week, when six Regents were honored with All-Northern Athletics Conference recognition.
Senior offensive lineman Nathan Murdent (Urbana, IL/ Champaign Central) was the only Regents named to the first team. The accounting major helped Rockford average over 275 yards of offense per game this season. Twice this season, the Regents offensive line cleared the way for Rockford to gain over 300 yards on the ground.
Senior defensive back Brandon Standley (Peoria, IL/ Peoria) and freshman linebacker Anthony Losasso (Bettendorf, IA/ Bettendorf) were named to the All-NAC 2nd Team. Standley, a psychology major, recorded 22 tackles and broke up 10 passes. Standley also scored two touchdowns on an interception and blocked punt recovery. Losasso led the Regents with 69 tackles on the season, including establishing a NAC record with 18 tackles against Aurora.
Senior quarterback Matt Muscia (Chicago, IL/ Holy Cross), senior wide out Ben Powers (Winnebago, IL/ Winnebago), and sophomore linebacker Brent Alexander (LeRoy, IL/ LeRoy) also received Honorable Mention.
