GREENVILLE, IL – One game into the season and the Rockford College men’s basketball team has already match its win total from last year. On Saturday afternoon, the Regents opened their 2008-09 season with a 79-68 victory at Greenville College.
Once the season opening jitters wore off for both teams, the Regents and Panthers began what would be an exciting wire-to-wire game. Due to solid defensive play both ways, neither team was able to establish a rhythm in the opening half. Both team shot under 40% from the field, with the Regents also connecting on just one of their 10 first half three-point attempts. Junior Andrew Weber (Roscoe, IL/ Boylan) led Rockford with 10 points and six rebounds in the game’s first 20 minutes.
Through tough defensive and a renewed commitment to rebounding, the Regents were able to extend a three point halftime lead to 22 midway through the second half. But the Panthers would not go with down without a fight, eventually cutting the Rockford lead to 8. Rockford managed to hold on the win, hitting their final four shots from the field and connecting on three of their final four free throws in the game’s final two minutes.
Rockford was led by Weber and senior Rennell Taylor (Chicago, IL/ Hales Franciscan) who each scored 17 points. Juniors Danny Armelin (Gonzales, TX/ Gonzales) and Garrett Staniec (Glenview, IL/ Glenbrook South) each added 14, while senior Willie Howard (Milwaukee, WI/ Wisconsin Lutheran) chipped in with 11 points. Weber also grabbed nine rebounds and Howards recorded five steals.
Rockford will travel to Waverly, IA next weekend to play in the Wartburg College Buzz Levick/ Pizza Ranch Tipoff Tournament. The Regents will face the host on Friday at 6:00 PM.
