Milwaukee, WI – During the 2007-08 basketball season, the Regents basketball teams seemed to be going in different directions. The men finished a disappointing 1-24, while the women improved seven games over 2006-07 and made an appearance in the Northern Athletics Conference post-season tournament. With all of the changes during the summer of 2008, both Regents programs now seem to be in the same place as the 2008-09 campaign opens, looking up at the opposition, as reflected in the opening NAC basketball coaches polls. Both squads are expected to finish fifth in the north division in the conference’s new two-division format.
The Regent’s men’s team has retooled during the off-season, with only three returning players to start the season. Senior Rennell Taylor (Chicago, IL/ Hales Franciscan) will continue to act as Coach Ryan Rebsom’s floor general, while sophomores Tyler Nauman (Hinckley, IL/ Hinckley-Big Rock) and Taylor Stinson (Schiller Park, IL/ East Leyden) will be called upon for more consistent outside shooting. New additions Andrew Weber (Roscoe, IL/ Boylan), Danny Armelin (Gonzales, TX/ Gonzales), and Garrett Staniec (Glenview, IL/ Glenbrook South) will be asked to make immediate contributions both on the floor and in the locker room.
The Regents new women’s head coach Jessica Stanek has also been busy since taking the job, assembling a new staff and trying to replace 43.7 points, 25.5 rebounds, and 10.4 assists per game lost to the graduation of six seniors. Senior three-point specialist Kim Nielsen (Evergreen Park, IL/ Evergreen Park) has already begun to display a more assertive leadership role on the court. Senior Tori Turman (Winnebago, IL/ Winnebago) has been given the keys to the Regents offense, while fellow senior Amber Lee (Rockford, IL/ Auburn) will be more of a slashing, scoring threat for Rockford.
Beginning with the 2008-09 season, the Northern Athletic Conference will use divisional play for both men and women. Rockford will begin in the north division, and with Alverno, MSOE, and Wisconsin Lutheran, will rotate between the north and south every two years. Rockford will face each team in the north twice (home and away) and teams from the south once.
