But the Rockford women fought through the rain and cold donditions to make history. The Rockford College women's soccer team got Homecoming 2008 out to a rousing start with a hard fought 3-2 victory over the Alverno College Inferno on Tuesday.
The Regents had been held scoreless for over 360 minutes before senior captain Christina Koblosh (Yonkers, NY/ Our Lady of Victory) broke the seal in the game's 36th minute. The goal was Koblosh's sixth of the campaign. But one wasn't enough for the Regents senior.
Just after halftime, Koblosh was at it again. This time, Koblosh tickled the twine on a header off the foot of fellow senior Kelly Madison (Loves Park, IL/ Harlem). The goal gave the Regents a 2-0 lead.
Just under 12 minutes later, sophomore midfielder Wendy Murphy (Phoenix, AZ/ Mountain Pointe) got into the act. Murphy's goal, her fifth of the year, gave the Regents a lead they would not relinquish.
The Inferno mounted a fierce comeback attempt in the game's final 20 minutes, but Rockford goalie freshman Jessica Schroeder (Lake Villa, IL/ Lakes Community) held firm, many of her nine saves on the game coming in the game's final minutes.
The Regents will host USCAA power Robert Morris College on Thursday at Sam Greeley field. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
