SHEBOYGAN, WI – For the first three games of the Rockford College football season, the Regents lacked intensity coming out of the locker room. Saturday’s Northern Athletics Conference opener was a bit different for Rockford. Again the Regents dominated 30 minutes of football, and for the first time this season, it was the second half. Unfortunately for Rockford, it was the first half that did the Regents in, eventually leading to a 33-28 loss at the hands of the Lakeland College Muskies.
Rockford’s first half was as some of their previous second halves. Rockford’s first five drives ended with three punts, a turnover on downs, and an interception. Midway through the second quarter, the Regents trailed the Muskies 27-0. With just under 5 minutes to play, junior quarterback Mike Sosnowski (Eldridge, IA/ North Scott) hit senior receiver Ben Powers (Winnebago, IL/ Winnebago) from 11 yards out for the Regents first score. After 30 minutes, the Regents trailed 33-6.
Rockford entered the third stanza having found new energy in the locker room. After holding the Muskies out of the end zone after eight plays inside the 10 yard line, Rockford immediately drove the ball 96 yards for a score. The 3:29 drive was capped by a 22 yard touchdown run by freshman Brandon Stinson (Chicago, IL/ Prosser). Then the Regents defense got into the scoring act. On a third-and-short Regents senior corner back Brandon Standley (Peoria, IL/ Peoria) intercepted a Muskies pass and returned the ball 39 yards for a touchdown, cutting the Lakeland lead to 33-20. After another defensive stop, the Regents punt coverage recorded a safety, when the Lakeland punter mishandled a snap. After 45 minutes of action, Rockford had sliced into the Muskies’ advantage, cutting the lead to 33-22.
With just over three minutes remaining in the game, Rockford again crossed the plain of the end zone. This time, Sosnowski scampered 24 yards. With the score 33-28, Rockford’s defense forced another punt, giving Rockford the ball with just over 2 minutes to play and 83 yards to pay dirt. Unfortunately, Rockford failed to mount the final game winning drive.
Sosnowski led the Regents offensively, completing 9-17 passes for 107 yards and a score and rushing for 65 yards and a touchdown. Powers finished with five catches for 46 yards and a touchdown. Defensively, senior Zac Wilken (East Moline, IL/ United Township) had 10 tackles, while sophomore Josh Ross (Elgin, IL/ Larkin) recorded 9.5 tackles including 1.5 for loss.
Rockford, now 0-4 for the first time in school history, will try to pick up their first win on Saturday when the Regents host Concordia University Chicago for Homecoming 2008.
