An open house and orientation for the Associated Colleges of Illinois (ACI) College Readiness Program at Rockford College aimed at first-generation, minority and low-income high school students will be held at the college Sept. 27, 1 p.m. – 3 p.m. in the Burpee Center Grace Roper Lounge.

The free College Readiness Program helps students map a road to college through year-round campus-based activities designed to provide academic enrichment, college preparation, and leadership development.

As part of the program, Rockford College resources, faculty and students are used to provide information to the participants so they become familiar with the college experience while they are still in high school. The ultimate aim is for the students to go on to college once they graduate.

The program runs for four years, and students enroll as they begin high school. They spend one Saturday a month at Rockford College for educational seminars and also take part in other activities such as skill-building classes, preparatory workshops and information sessions.

One key to success in the program is the immersion into the college environment.   Participants experience 1,000 hours on college campuses before they graduate from high school if they attend all sessions.

Organizers point to a variety of successful outcomes with the program. Since its founding in 1996, 99 percent of participants have graduated from high school and 94 percent have gone on to college. It was honored by the Workforce Board of Metropolitan Chicago with its Promising Practice Award.

ACI is a group of 23 private colleges and universities rooted in the liberal arts tradition that leverages the expertise of its statewide network to provide underserved students with new educational opportunities.  It accomplishes this goal through scalable and sustainable programs that recruit, prepare, and retain teachers in high-need schools and help low-income students prepare for and graduate from college.

The open house and orientation will provide an overview of the program, benefits for participants, what they will learn, and a brief history of the College Readiness Program. To reserve a place at the open house, contact Jonica Trude at Rockford College, phone 815-226-2824; e-mail:
