Jennifer Torrence is looking for a few used children’s books for a good cause.

The Rockford College senior elementary education student is hoping to collect enough books to make a difference for kids at Summerdale, Nashold, and Haskell elementary schools in Rockford.

“I wanted to do something productive for the schools, and thought it would be really neat to organize a book drive for children’s books,” says Torrence.

Torrence says she is organizing the book drive on her own without any outside motivation or reward.  There’s no class project connected with the drive and no grade. It’s just something she wants to do.

“I’ve learned that the more kids read the better readers they’ll become,” she said. Books suitable for classroom libraries and nonfiction are high on her list, as well as bilingual books.

If she is successful with this drive, Torrence may take on other schools later. For now, she hopes to collect as many books as possible, new or used.  Books may be dropped off at the following locations:

Oct. 4 - Oct. 17
•    All Rockford Hilander Food Store locations

Oct. 18 - Oct. Nov. 1
•    Woodman’s Food Market, 3115 McFarland Dr., Rockford
•    Sylvan Learning Center, 6785 Weaver, Rockford
•    Dolphin Swim Club, 6501 Rock Valley Parkway, Loves Park
•    Rockford College Burpee Center, 5050 E. State St., Rockford
