A Rockford College faculty member, student and community partner have each been awarded a Community Based Learning Award this spring as part of the College’s annual Honor’s Day Convocation.

Circle of Change, a dog training and handling provider that specializes in training comfort dogs for people suffering from traumatic events, was awarded the community partner award. The organization seeks to help veterans who suffer from the traumatic effects of war through dog training and handling thereby developing confidence, respect, and trust. The program has been shown to improve veterans’ quality of life, self-esteem and social skills. Circle of Change has worked with students in community-based learning through Rockford College’s MBA Organizational Communications class on three separate occasions.

Assistant Professor of Anthropology and Sociology Matt Dalstrom, Ph.D. was awarded with a faculty award that gives recognition to developing strong partnerships between organizations and students, while also developing leadership skills within students. Dr. Dalstrom has worked with various agencies including Habitat for Humanity, MELD, Winnebago County Health Department, Hospice, and Healing Pathways. Matt is also a member of the St. Anthony College of Nursing Faculty and Student Research Board.

The Community Based Learning Award for outstanding students in the community was presented to Harvard, Ill., resident Gabriela Delafuente for her involvement in adolescent development. Gabby chose to serve her community based learning hours at the Harvard Pregnancy Support Center, a center where teen moms come for assistance. During her time there she counseled and helped young, expecting mothers find resources while providing parenting videos as a part of the program.
