Position:   Graduate Assistant, Jane Addams Center for Civic Engagement              

Dept:        Jane Addams Center for Civic Engagement


The Graduate Assistant for Jane Addams Center for Civic Engagement will assist in the day to day operations and will report directly to the Director of Jane Addams Center for Civic Engagement. The primary emphasis of this position is to assist with the Jane Addams Service Fellows Program with the goal to provide leadership and guidance to the Fellows and the Rockford Community.



· Strong interpersonal and public communication with a variety of community resources and agencies

· Ability to multi-task and utilize critical thinking skills in relationship to program development

· Experience in scheduling meetings and appointments

· Advanced computer skills required; including work, excel, power point and publisher

· Strong interpersonal communication skills ( in person and on the phone)

· Prepare check requests and process expense reports

· Responsible for updating Portal, Website, and Facebook accounts through Social Media

· Work collaboratively with faculty and staff across campus

· Assist Director in preparing for presentations or meetings

· Attend and take minutes at Jane Addams Center Board of Advocates meetings

· Prepare and send Orientation correspondence to new students

· Oversee the contents and completion of the Orientation Handbooks (Fall & Spring)

· Assist in the preparation of all activities linked with New Student Orientation

· Prepare, finalize, and distribute completed Orientation evaluations

· Assist Director throughout Orientation Transfer Orientation, New Student Orientation
and the PLUNGE

· Assist Director in planning/implementation of Alan Hutchcroft Alternative Spring Break

· Schedule meetings and contact past participants

· Assist in advertising materials for Alan Hutchcroft Alternative Spring Break

· Oversee the posting of Service/Volunteer opportunities on the Portal and Bulletin Boards

· Assist in building relationships with new and current community partners

· Responsible for coordinating the Last Lecture event

· Meet 1:1 with Director on a daily/weekly basis

· Assist in completing end of the month, semester, and year status reports on programs and events

· Assist in overall program planning

· Research "Best Practices” in Civic Engagement and other topics as needed

· Other duties as assigned


  • Candidate will be enrolled in the MAT or MBA program.
  • Ideal candidate will have undergraduate experience in student life/student development and be familiar with co-curricular activities in higher education.
  • Past experience with event planning and community involvement a must.
  • Experience in Microsoft Office: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Publisher.
  • Experience in a variety of social media.

Physical Demands:

The physical and mental demands of this position are respresentative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential job functions.  While performing the duties of this job, employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, feel objects, tools or controls and talk and hear.  The employee frequently is required to sit and reach with hands and arms.  The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, stoop and kneel.  The incumbent may occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
