Job Description

Job Title: Director of English as a Second Language (ESL) Program

SUMMARY:

Rockford College is seeking a highly motivated, enthusiastic and dynamic leader to join its newly formed Global Affairs Department as Director of the English as a Second Language (ESL) program. This position will provide leadership in all aspects of planning and operations for the program. The Director will be charged with working with the Associate Vice President of Global Affairs in the creation and implementation of a restructure plan for the ESL program in anticipation of significant enrollment growth. Director will act as a Designated School Official (DSO) to ensure students comply with the non-immigrant regulations set by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (DSCIS) of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:

Educational

  • Restructure ESL curriculum to focus on academic preparation in English, creating a pathway program into Rockford College undergraduate and graduate programs
  • Create assessment model and choose classroom materials that are centered on Rockford College's learning expectations and consistent with the mission and vision of the institution
  • Mentor ESL instructors on cultural interactions in relation to classroom management and instruction
  • Act as a substitute teacher for ESL classes, as needed
  • Advise and register ESL students for program courses

Managerial/Supervisory

  • Hire and develop quality ESL instructors
  • Supervise, mentor, and evaluate all ESL personnel

Administrative

  • Participate as crucial member of the Global Affairs team in development and implementation of comprehensive internationalization of institution
  • Create marketing and promotional materials for ESL program, ensuring consistency with Global Affairs and Rockford College standards
  • Seek partnership opportunities with local enterprises interested in ESL services
  • Participate in recruitment and enrollment efforts for ESL program
  • Create ESL calendar and course schedules and coordinate scheduling of classrooms
  • Coordinate with all College offices affecting international students to ensure quality and constructive student experience
  • Develop and supervise ESL student cultural excursion program
  • Develop and nurture conversation partners and friendship families programs
  • Develop and maintain a business plan for ESL program in partnership with AVP of Global Affairs
  • Lead College through efforts in becoming a TOEFL testing site
  • Represent the ESL program to other campus constituencies
  • Act as an advocate and counselor for ESL students and provide guidance related to non-immigrant, cultural assimilation, and campus-wide issues
  • Serve the College on committees as requested
  • Other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Goal-oriented leader with ability to act responsibly and entrepreneurially in initiating action plans for change and improvement
  • Professional knowledge of ESL approaches and methodologies, including assessment techniques, test/measurement principles, and instructional material design and development
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Comfortable and enthusiastic in a wide range of cultural groups and cross-cultural relationships
  • Effective time management skills
  • Ability to use MS Office products
  • Ability to manage a budget and keep accurate records
  • Ability to communicate clearly in English to non-native speakers
  • A citizen or lawful permanent resident of the United States (in order to be a Rockford College Designated School Official - DSO)
  • Hold a valid driver's license

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor's degree in ESOL, TESOL, Linguistics or teaching a foreign language. Master's degree preferred
  • A minimum of two years of teaching ESL full time or equivalent, including experience developing curriculum and teaching material
  • Experience learning a foreign language is a plus
  • At least two years management experience required, experience supervising and evaluating teaching staff a plus
  • Experience with SEVIS, non-immigrant regulations and DSCIS a plus
