Job Description

Job Title: Lead Teacher of English Language Institute (ELI)


Manage all duties related to the operation, growth, quality, and vibrancy of the ELI program. Coordinate the management of relevant SEVIS accounts with Designated School Officials (DSO's).



  • Create curriculum and choose assessments and class materials for ELI program that are consistent with the mission, vision, and quality expectations of Rockford College
  • Create new classes in the ELI program that are consistent with the mission, vision and quality expectations of Rockford College
  • Teach classes to ensure quality and develop materials – quantity to be determined
  • Act as a substitute teacher for ELI classes
  • Register ELI students for ELI courses


  • Locate and develop quality ELI instructors
  • Supervise and evaluate ELI instructors
  • Supervise and evaluate the ELI Graduate Assistant


  • Create marketing materials and market the ELI program
  • Look for new revenue opportunities related to ELI
  • Develop promotional opportunities for ELI
  • Create ELI calendar and class schedules
  • Coordinate scheduling of ELI classrooms
  • Work with other offices and individuals with responsibility for international students and programs, such as Admissions, Graduate Office, Student Life, and college learning resources
  • Prepare and administer budgets for ELI program
  • Prepare evaluations and reports related to the program
  • Represent the ELI program to other campus constituencies
  • Be an advocate and counselor for ELI students and provide guidance related to non-immigrant, cultural assimilation, and campus-wide issues
  • Serve the college on committees as requested
  • Model and encourage civic engagement for students and direct reports
  • Other duties as assigned



  • Recruit, hire, develop, supervise and maintain a staff of ESL instructors
  • Supervise an ELI Graduate Assistant
  • Make hiring, development, and separation decisions related to the above


  • High energy self starter; must be able to take initiative with minimal guidance and be comfortable working both as an individual and as part of a team
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with various stakeholders
  • Effective time management skills
  • Ability to use MS Office products
  • Ability to operate normal electronic office equipment
  • Ability to manage a budget and keep accurate records
  • Ability to communicate clearly in English to non-native speakers
  • Be a citizen or lawful permanent resident of the United States (in order to be a Rockford College Designated School Official - DSO)


  • A minimum of two years of teaching ESL full time or equivalent, including experience developing curriculum and training material
  • Bachelors degree or equivalent training and/or certification in ESOL, TESOL, Linguistics, or teaching a foreign language
  • Experience learning a foreign language
  • Two years management experience
