ROCKFORD, Ill. – The Rockford College football team snapped a 23 game losing streak on Saturday with a 28-12 victory over Olivet College. The Regents last win dated back to November 7th, 2009 when they beat Maranatha Baptist Bible College on the road 16-12. It was the first home victory since November 8th, 2008 when the Regents also beat Maranatha Baptist Bible College 20-0. The win gives head coach Vic Wallace his 175th win of his collegiate coaching career and his first since becoming Rockford's head coach at the beginning of last season.
The Regents got on the board first when junior transfer quarterback Aabed Nekrawesh (Fremont, Calif./American) found sophomore tight end Dane Kirk (Rochelle, Ill./Rochelle) in the end zone from 9 yards out. The score came with just over 4 minutes remaining in the 1st quarter and gave the Regents their first lead of the season. Olivet responded with a 1-yard touchdown run on a quarterback sneak by Tony Phillips with 3:22 remaining in the half to make it 7-6 after a missed extra point. After a 3 and out on the Regents next possession, Olivet marched the ball down the field as was faced with a 4th and goal from the 7 yard line with 6 seconds left. Olivet passed on the short field attempt and instead elected to throw the ball on 4th down only to be denied by the Regents defense as the half expired.
Rockford carried that momentum into the second half as they came out and scored on their opening drive with a 1-yard touchdown by junior Matthew Botello (Whittier, Calif/Pioneer). Botello had a huge day for the Regents rushing for 177 yards on 21 carries. The Regents rushed for 254 yards, their most since 10/11/08 when the Regents rushed for 361 during a 41-38 overtime victory against Concordia University Chicago. Rockford's defense led the way in the 2nd half with 3 interceptions including a 50-yard interception return for a touchdown by junior free safety Jacob Arnold(Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield). Sophomore Seth Swinehart (Rockford, Ill/Jefferson) led the Regents defense with a team high 8 tackles including 1 sack and 1 tackle for loss. Freshmen linebacker Michael Krieter (Rockford, Ill/Boylan) finished with 3 tackles including 1 sack, 1 tackle for loss, and 1 interception. Rockford's defense held Olivet to 241 yards of total offense and those 4 interceptions.
The Regents will return to the field September 29, after a bye next week, to open up Northern Athletics Conference play against Concordia University Chicago. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at Sam Greeley Field.
