Volleyball Places 5th at Monmouth Tournament

MONMOUTH, Ill. - The women's volleyball team opened up their season for the fifth consecutive year at the Monmouth College Tournament. The ladies have now gone 1-2 each of the last five seasons at the tournament.
The volleyball team began the tournament with matches against Monmouth College and Principia College. The Regents lost each of those two matches by a score of 3-0 but lost 4 of the 6 sets by a total of 13 points. In the first match against Monmouth it was Heather Hyland (Belvidere, Ill./Belvidere) who led the team offensively with 8 kills in 21 attempts. Defensive specialist Jossilyn Jones (Rockford, Ill./Guilford) was a force recording a game-high 17 digs. In the second match it was senior Nicole Lawler (Pearl City, Ill./Pearl City) posting a double-double against Principia with 10 kills and 14 digs.
After losing their first two matches they were slated for a 5th place showdown with Robert Morris University - Peoria. This time it was Rockford who won a close first set 25-20 to take control of the match. The Regents carried that momentum into the second and third sets winning each of them in convincing fashion 25-11. Hyland and Lawler helped carry the Regents offensively with 10 and 14 kills respectively. Hyland also added 13 digs to record her first double-double of the season.
Senior Nicole Lawler was rewarded for her stellar play at the tournament earning a spot on the All-Tournament Team. Lawler recorded 30 kills, 32 digs and 9 aces during the three matches at the tournament.
The volleyball team will return to action on Friday, September 8th when they take part in the Jim Coleman Memorial Invitational hosted by Aurora University. Rockford will play North Central College at 2 p.m and Lake Forest College at 6 p.m. at Aurora University.
