Rockford, Ill. - The cross country teams begin their seasons with the Rockford College Season Opener on Saturday September 1st. The meet on Saturday will be the first one on campus in decades. Although it will be a small meet, it is very exciting time for the cross country teams to be able to compete on campus in front of their home fans. The course will be set up in a series of loops around the athletic facilities on the outer edge of campus. The Running Regents then hit the road for two meets with the first coming at Concordia University Wisconsin and the second at the University of Minnesota. Rockford then hosts its second meet of the season this time in Belvidere, Ill. at Prairie Fields Sports Park. The Regents will finish out the regular season portion of their schedule with two more meets before the Northern Athletics Conference Championships on October 27th at 11 a.m.
The women’s team will once again be lead by junior sensation Genesis Cerrato (Las Vegas, Nev./Valley). Cerrato has been outstanding during her first two years in a Regents uniform. She has received numerous awards and honors including being named All-Conference during each of her two seasons. Last season she finished with the 2nd best time at the NAC Championships. The Las Vegas native has also been named NAC Women’s Cross Country Student-Athlete of the week three times during her career. She will be joined on the team by returner Taylor Inghram (Las Vegas, Nev./Arbor View) and five new runners including four freshman.
The men’s team will also be very young this year with five of the nine student-athletes being a sophomore or freshman. The team will be led by sophomores Timothy Lydy (Germantown, Wis./Germantown) and Carl Rapp (Union, Ill./Belvidere North). Lydy received Honorable Mention All-NAC honors during his freshman season and was only 1.2 seconds away from being an All-Conference selection. This year’s incoming class is headed by freshman runner Zach Quinn (Heyworth, Ill./Heyworth). The men’s team looks to continue to build on its crop of young talent to make its way up the conference rankings.
