Rockford, Ill., — Deacon Patrick Moynihan , President of The Haitian Project (THP) and head of its tuition-free Catholic boarding school in Haiti, Louverture Cleary School (LCS) will present "Transformational Development in Haiti” on Thursday, September 6, at 7 p.m. Deacon Moynihan was ordained a Permanent Deacon for the Rockford Catholic Diocese in October of 2001 and was awarded an honorary doctorate in humanitarian service from Providence College [RI] this spring The lecture will take place in Maddox Theatre, Clark Arts Center on the Rockford College campus, 5050 East State Street, Rockford.

Deacon Moynihan, a graduate of Brown University and Providence College, left a career as a commodities trader with Louis Dreyfus Corporation (LDC) to become President of The Haitian Project, Inc., in 1996. The Haitian Project through Louverture Cleary School educates and nurtures academically talented and motivated students from Haitian families who cannot afford the cost of their children’s education in order to maximize their potential and enable them to work toward building a Haiti where justice and peace thrive. Under Deacon Moynihan’s leadership, THP has become a catalyst for positive change in Haiti, educating the future leaders who will make Haiti’s better tomorrow a reality.

Drawing on his 15-plus years of experience living and working in Haiti, Deacon Moynihan speaks candidly about Post Quake Haiti addressing the rise of the Aid-Industrial Complex and the marginalization of the Haitian government; the well-intentioned but counterproductive programs that impede human development and perpetuate the status quo rather than encouraging systemic development; the value of Transformational Development guided by the Catholic missionary principles of Subsidiarity and Solidarity; and the importance of education as a fundamental tool in stabilizing the Nation of Haiti.
Through his examination of this complex nexus of issues Deacon Moynihan makes the case for what the country of Haiti truly needs at this seminal moment in its history.
