Rockford, Ill., – For the 17th consecutive year, new Rockford College students will roll up their sleeves and ‘plunge’ into the Rockford community by volunteering on Saturday, August 25, from 8 a.m.-12 p.m. This year, students are working with the YMCA to provide services needed at local YMCA locations including the Northeast Family branch, Camp Winnebago, and the ID Pennock branch. Joining the new students each year are returning students, faculty and staff members of the college. Projects on tap this year include beautification of grounds, mulching, sanding and painting of the Log Lodge, revamping of signage, and creek cleaning.

"The Plunge” not only helps new students experience different areas of the city first hand and but also carries on the legacy of the college’s most famous alumna, Jane Addams, by participating in service to their new community. Every incoming student spends at least four hours volunteering at local agencies. This year, the Jane Addams Center for Civic Engagement at Rockford College hopes to facilitate and provide 5,000 service hours between the start of classes and graduation.
