Library
Instruction
Colman Library is a "teaching library".
It supports the teaching mission of the college by:
* providing information resources needed
by students for their class assignments and research, and
* teaching students how to use these resources
for their information needs.
What is meant by "information resources"
has grown beyond the traditional books and journals to include an
array of electronic resources. The use of these varied resources
is taught mainly through:
* individual contact in the library, and
* assignment-related instruction to whole
classes by a librarian.
Professors who make assignments which require
the use of these resources are strongly urged to provide their classes
an introduction to the resources available at or through Colman
Library. Though students today are increasingly familiar with computer
use and the online world, it is our experience that few are savvy
library users, let alone sophisticated searchers or users of information.
It's not uncommon for students with assignments that bring them
to the library to be at a loss about how to get started.
The librarians want to work with classroom
faculty to help their students find and use the information resources
they will need to succeed in their coursework. We are happy to either
arrange for a presentation by a librarian in class, or consult with
those who wish to provide this instruction to their classes themselves.
Please call Phil Hjemboe
at x4165 to discuss your library instruction needs.
Purpose: Class reserves provides a
convenient method of providing materials set aside for individual
classes to use.
What: Any kind of material may be put on reserve, including:
personal copies of books, books from the library's collection, journals,
journal articles, videos, music formats, test materials, answer
books, sample papers or tests, notebooks, etc. (Note: We cannot
place materials on reserve borrowed from other libraries.)
How: Materials must be brought to the Circulation Desk and
a reserve form filled out. This form identifies the material, indicates
what class it is for, and for how long the material may be checked
out.
Processing time: We ask for at least one day before students
are told to start asking for materials placed on reserve.
Copyright: For photocopies of copyrighted material placed
on reserve:
* a copyright statement must be signed
(at the circulation desk) indicating this use conforms to the
Fair Use provisions of U.S. copyright law. (In most cases this
means that this same article has not been used for previous classes,
and if it has, the instructor has obtained permission from the
copyright holder for continued use.) Conformance is each instructor's
responsibility; library staff will not act in a policing role.
* the source of the material must be clearly
indicated. This information can be written at the top or bottom
of the first page if the copy does not otherwise show the source.
The information required includes journal or book title, author(s),
date, and page numbers.
* these will be returned at the end of
the term to the instructors who placed them.
Materials (other than photocopies of copyrighted
material) may be left on reserve from semester to semester, if desired.
At the end of each term a list of all materials on reserve will
be sent to each professor. This list should be returned indicating
which materials are to be removed and returned and which should
remain on reserve.
Call Lori Erickson, x 4037, with any questions
about reserves materials. top
General information about the library
How big are the collections at Colman
Library?
The general collection numbers approximately
144,000 volumes. We subscribe to about 400 periodicals. There
is a small but growing collection of music CDs as well as videos
in
DVD formats. All items may be searched via the library
catalog.
What do I need to know about borrowing
library materials?
Faculty and staff may borrow books from the
General Collection for, basically, one semester. Due dates for these
materials are (approximately) Dec. 15 and May 15 each year. These
items may be renewed for another semester by either calling (x4035)
or stopping at the Circulation Desk. Borrowed items may, however,
be recalled after 30 days.
Faculty may request to borrow Reference books,
which don't ordinarily circulate. Please talk to the Reference Librarian
(x4165) to arrange this.
Music CDs are loaned on the same basis for
students and employees alike - 30 days, nonrewable.
Fines are not collected from faculty or staff.
Overdue notices are sent out, however. Materials 30 days overdue
will be billed for replacement ($55.00 + processing fee), so materials
should be returned or renewed to avoid or clear a bill. top
How does Interlibrary Loan work at Colman
Library?
Faculty and staff may request Interlibrary
loan via online forms or by filling out
a paper form at the Circulation Desk. Those making requests will
be notified when the materials arrive; books must be picked up at
the Circulation Desk, photocopies will be sent to campus boxes.
Expect to wait 5 days to 2 weeks in most cases.
Fines: Faculty and staff are not fined
for overdue interlibrary loans. However, it is important to us that
we return materials in a timely way to maintain good relations with
our cooperating libraries.
Due dates are set by the lendor library,
not by Colman Library, and are usually about one month. Please observe
due dates and request a renewal if necessary (libraries will usually
allow a single renewal). Renewals, as with original due dates, are
at the discretion of the lender. top
How do I reserve a room in the library?
Call Cathy Kight at x5041 to reserve either
of the following rooms for campus events:
The Rare Book Room on the main level
has a capacity of 25. It is equipped with a computer,
Internet
connection, and computer projector. There is also a large
scretelevision with VCR and DVD players. An overhead projector
is also available.
The Large Seminar Room on the upper
level will accommodate about 16 people. There is a large blackboard
but any other equipment needs must be arranged for from A-V
(x4038). top
Are there copiers for use in the library?
There are two copiers on the main level.
Copies are $.10. One machine is equipped to accept coins and
both
will accept copy cards. A third copy machine is located
on the lower level and accepts copy cards only.
Is research assistance available?
Phil Hjemboe (x4165) is happy to provide
reference or research assistance to any faculty or staff member
daily, 8 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. top
How are journals arranged? Can they be
checked out?
All our journals and magazines are arranged
alphabetically by title. Issues up to 6 months old are shelved on
the main level in Current Periodicals. Older issues are moved to
the shelves on the lower level. Please ask for assistance at the
Circulation Desk if needed.
Periodicals do not circulate.
