Home > Community Education > English as a Second Language Program > Placement Exams & TOEFL PreparationPlacement ExamsNew students take placement exams given at the beginning of each term to determine their proficiency level. Currently these exams include a 35-minute writing sample, and an institutional test, which has sections on listening comprehension, grammar, vocabulary and reading comprehension.
New students may be placed in a different level after the first week of the term depending on additional proficiency testing and evaluation. Continuing ESL students who pass their classes move to the next higher level of course work in the following term.
TOEFL PreparationAlthough we do not offer the TOEFL test, our classes prepare students to perform well on the TOEFL exam. Students planning to take the TOEFL are given assignments that are specific to TOEFL preparation. Many of our students have transferred to Rockford College's accredited programs or other colleges or universities after completing our ESL program.
