Alan Ryan, the Warden at New College, University of Oxford, has taught philosophy and politics at universities around the world. His books include The Philosophy of the Social Sciences, Property and Political Theory, Russell: A Political Life, and Liberal Anxieties and the Liberal Education. He has most recently edited Mill: A Critical Edition and Liberty and the Subjection of Women by J.S. Mill. A fellow of the British Academy, he is a long-time contributor to The New York Review of Books and to magazines and newspapers in Britain, in particular Times Higher Education, where he writes a monthly column.
