Details

Sponsored by the Rockford College Nursing Student Organization and Alpha Helix Science Club, a Be The Match Bone Marrow registry drive will be held on Wednesday, March 27, 12 – 4 p.m., and located at the Lion’s Den, Rockford College, 5050 E. State Street.

According to the Rock River Valley Blood Center, 10,000 patients who need a life-saving marrow or blood cell transplant search for a donor every year. Leukemia, lymphoma and other life-threatening diseases can be cured with a marrow cell transplant, but only if there is a match. Patients in need of a marrow or blood cell transplant are most likely to match someone of their own race and ethnicity.
Patients find matches in their own family 30 percent of the time. The rest of these patients look to the Registry. Most often marrow cells are donated from your arm in a procedure similar to donating plasma or platelets.

The National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP) facilitates unrelated marrow and blood cell transplants as a single point of access for a long-standing collaborative network of national and international leading medical facilities in marrow and cord blood transplantation. The NMDP connects patients, doctors, donors and researchers to the resources they need to help more people live longer and healthier lives.
