Kristyn King considers coaching the women’s softball program
at Rockford College an opportunity for success – both for
the players individually and as a team. Since taking over
the program in 1993, King, who is also the Associate Athletic
Director and Senior Women's Administrator at Rockford College,
has created a close-knit program.
“A team player with a positive attitude is the type that makes successful
teams,” King said.
King earned a Degree in Sports Management from Rockford College,
compiling an impressive record as a member of the softball and basketball
teams and many accolades along the way; most valuable player; captain;
all-conference; President’s Cup for sportsmanship; second-team All-Midwest
Region; and Athlete of the Year.
“College is the place where most women athletes excel, since
professional opportunities in athletes for women are somewhat
limited,” King explained. “We do our best to provide our
athletes with an excellent level of competition. Our conference
and non-conference schedules are solid.”
King earned her Master’s Degree at Northwest Missouri State University
where she served as assistant softball coach for two years before
returning to her alma mater. At Rockford she served as head coach
in both women’s basketball and softball for three years before taking
over the Assistant AD job and giving up basketball. When 2001 rang
in, King was named Athletic Director.
As a coach, King continues to build upon what
has been established within the women’s programs.
“Female athletes, who have a good work ethic
and determination to succeed on and off the field are the type of
student-athlete we like to have in our program,” she said.
“Rockford College is an outstanding school academically, and it
is ideally suited for true student athletes. As coaches, we do our
best to work practice around players’ class schedules because the
‘student’ comes first in ‘student-athlete’.”
While King expects her players to work hard in preparing for competition,
she considers enjoyment an important part of sports as well.
“I like athletics to be fun,” she said. “I also believe that participation
in athletics reflects on how a person will handle life experiences
after their collegiate athletic careers.”
Kristyn lives in Loves Park with her husband, Kevin.
