A message
from the Chair…
The history department at Rockford College offers the B.S. and the B.A. degree. We also offer a special track for students pursuing secondary teaching certification and for those seeking a minor in history. We encourage students to gain a broad historical understanding. All majors must take courses in European and American history as well as in at least one non-western area. We approach history not as an accumulation of facts, but as a theoretical discipline. Students are encouraged to read critically, to write coherently, to analyze and organize information and to appreciate divergent points of view. These are skills that should serve you well your entire life whatever your occupation. Mostly however, history should be enjoyable and enlightening. We each are granted only one lifetime of experiences. The study of history provides the opportunity to borrow and learn from the experiences of others across the centuries.
Since we each teach a wide range of courses, we are able to bring a broad perspective to our classes. Since we often have the same students in different classes, we are able to relate material in one class to things students have learned in another. I think that you will find the history program at Rockford College to be a real education in the best sense of that term. We would be glad to speak with you about your interests.
