Chuck Nelson joined Rockford University full time in the fall semester of 2015. Previously he taught as an Adjunct in the BSMS program and in the Computer Science department at the University .Mr. Nelson began his career teaching in junior high school and high school. For a short while, he taught in Georgia and then moved, taught and coached in Rockford Public Schools. Mr. Nelson then joined the Computer Science Department at Rock Valley College where he taught for nearly 30 years. Mr. Nelson held two positions at Rock Valley, one as a tenured faculty member and also as the Director of the Computer Science Department.
In addition to teaching, Mr. Nelson performed computer software consulting. Many consulting opportunities were with small companies needing assistance assessing and planning for their technology needs, especially their corporate database systems. Mr. Nelson was also heavily involved in the analysis, design, programming and implementation of department-level database systems. The consultations chosen were those that were directly related to his teaching activities. Mr. Nelson has performed training for many local companies, from basic computer skills to advanced computer programming.
Mr. Nelson has throughout his career reviewed Computer Science textbooks for authors and publishers. He has contributed and assisted several authors in the technical aspects of their work. Most often in this capacity Mr. Nelson wrote the computer programs in each chapter of the textbook and the end of chapter problems and solutions.
Mr. Nelson has always been active with local, national and international computer science professional organizations. Locally he has been a member and contributor to user groups and student computer clubs. He has been a member of several national and international organizations regarding computer science and computer science education.
At Rockford University, Mr. Nelson teaches in both the MIS and the Web computer degree programs. This includes courses as Database Systems, beginning and advanced Computer Organization, Information Systems, Object Oriented Programming, Analysis and Design, Independent Studies, Internships, Tutorials, and Senior Seminar.
