Welcome to Information Technology

Rockford University Information Technology provides you with network and internet connectivity, computer classrooms and labs, the portal, electronic resources such as e-mail and your course schedule, our emergency notification system, and the support of the IT Staff. Included here is information to use these resources responsibly including our e-mail policy, password requirements and security recommendations, spam and phishing warnings, and tips to ensure your e-mail account is available to you for a lifetime. Our hope is that you become an active participant in our evolving digital community.

The IT Help Desk is available in the lower level of the Colman Library (east entrance).
Log on to the portal
The absolute, first thing you need to do is log onto the portal and change your password. Go to and use the step by step instructions, and our tips for smart passwords. Everyone at Rockford University has a responsibility for proper handling and protection of confidential information, be part of the solution.

Um, what’s the portal?
The portal is our electronic community which provides you with a single point to sign on to e-mail, Self Service (more below), and a place to find out what’s going on around campus. The portal has a Campus Countdown to important events and dates, campus announcements, and calendars galore (Athletics, Theatre, Forum, and of course the Academic Calendar) can be found here.

Where are there computers for me to use?
A list of computer classrooms, labs, and hours is included in this packet. More than 14 classrooms received updates and technology this summer.

How do I get wireless internet access?
Wireless access is available in all academic buildings; most recently the Library, Scarborough, and Starr Science have been updated with new hardware for improved network performance. Watch as we continue to update more buildings with fiber and updated wireless access – very exciting.

Until we have our electronic bulletin to post items for sale, limit your broadcast email to All Faculty and Students.

Consider submitting information to the Communications Department for inclusion on the portal in lieu of a broadcast email message (see spam below). Contact the Communications Office to place information on the portal at Your item will be posted as soon as possible, and all items expire after 14 days. Inappropriate items will be rejected.

Spam and Phishing Awareness
Rockford University receives on average 300,000 e-mail messages a day, of which only 2% are valid e-mail – sadly the rest are spam. Spam as applied to e-mail means unsolicited bulk e-mail. Here are tips to safeguard your e-mail account from spam.

Take care when sharing your e-mail address; avoid subscribing to newsletters with unknown owners as often distribution lists are sold to spammers. Read privacy policies. Consider creating a hotmail or gmail account when communicating with unknown online vendors or list services.

Phishing is the criminally fraudulent process of attempting to acquire sensitive information such as usernames, passwords and credit card details, by masquerading as a trustworthy entity in an electronic communication. Communications purporting to be from PayPal, eBay, Youtube or online banks are commonly used to lure the unsuspecting. Phishing is typically carried out by e-mail or instant messaging. NEVER give your username or password to ANYONE via email.

RU Alert
RU Alert is a subscription-based emergency alert system for students, faculty, and staff at Rockford University. In the event of an emergency, the university community will be quickly informed of such through recorded voice phone messages sent to landline and/or cell phones, text messages, and e-mail messages. In addition, alerts will be posted on the portal crawl, public Web site, and sent to the news media.

Do you want to know when school is closed due to snowfall? Log into the portal, and go to the Emergency tab to subscribe to this service. Update your Profile today.

Self Service

Your course schedule and grades might be helpful information to you. Log into the portal and to access Self Service. Go to Self Service for class information including your syllabi.

Printing Green

Use Print Preview before printing, and follow the steps below
to print on both sides of a piece of paper.

How to enable double-sided printing.

1. In Office 2007, click the Office Button in the top left corner.
2. Click Print from the drop down menu. Click the Properties button.
3. Click the drop down menu for Duplex, select Open to Left. This will print double sided in book form.
4. Click OK then Print.

This option will remain enabled until you change it back or log off the computer.
