Please join us for an All-Alumni Celebratory Dinner honoring Alumni who will be receiving awards from the Association this year! Complimentary light hors d'oeuvres and a cash bar will be available during the Social Hour from 6:00-7:00pm and the program will begin at 7:00pm.
Dinner includes carving stations with your choice of herb roasted turkey or apricot glazed ham with vegetarian options also available. A cash bar will also be available.
2012 Recipients:
Talcott Cross Award – The oldest Rockford College award, the Talcott Cross is awarded to an Alumna for her constancy, devotion and a long history of meritorious service to Rockford College. One award may be given each year.
- Ruth Cekal ’56 From her first days as an alumna, she has organized gatherings and raised funds in service to her class and College. Serving 15 years on the Association board, she unites alumni across the decades, genders and campuses.
Karl C. Williams Award – Presented to an Alumnus for his constancy, devotion and a long history of meritorious service to Rockford College. One award may be given each year.
- Dr. David Tanaglia ’73 From mentor to booster to race director and "archivist,” he has served RC for nearly 40 years. His project to collect and nurture acorns from the old campus is now evidenced by four trees planted on the new campus.
Award of Distinction – Given to Alumni for fulfilling the ideals of Rockford College and bringing honor and esteem to the College in one or more of the following ways; through their vision, dedication, and initiative in a purposeful endeavor; by their responsive and sustained efforts in community improvements; or by their notable achievements in a profession. Up to three awards may be given each year.
- Judge Joyce Williams Warren ’71 First black law clerk for the Arkansas Supreme Court in 1977. She served as an assistant attorney general to Bill Clinton, becoming first black female judge in Arkansas 1983.
- Dr. Sara Varhus Hill ’71. Since January 2007, VP for Academic Affairs at Nazareth College, N.Y. For ten years, Dean of Arts and Sciences at SUNY Oswego, also serving their as Director of the Honors Program in Liberal Studies.
- Dr. Robert Hockberger ’71 Chair, Department of Emergency Medicine, Harbor-UCLA Medical Center. In 2008, he was named an American College of Emergency Professionals, California Hero of Emergency Medicine.
- Dr. Janet Hortin Geneczko ’73 Assistant Professor of Medicine, Assistant Professor of Pediatrics. Her clinical interests include relationship center care and health issues related to graduate / professional school stresses.
Outstanding Young Alumni Award – Given to an alumna/us who has finished her/his Rockford College tenure within the last 15 years. This alumna/us will have fulfilled the ideals of Rockford College by vision, dedication, and initiative in a purposeful endeavor, or through responsible and sustained efforts in the improvements of a community, or a notable achievement in a profession, thus having brought honor and esteem to Rockford College. One award may be given each year.
- Wendy Mazan Cook ’98 Recent Executive Director at Better Life Counseling Center in Jonesboro, Ark., having previously served as a Girl Scout Executive and as a Corporate Account Manager with St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
Alumna/Alumnus of the Year Award – Honors an alumna and/or alumnus for invaluable service to the Alumni Association and Rockford College during the past year. One award may be given each year.
- Keiko Habu Harada ’58 Spearheaded a January 2012 gathering in Kobe, Japan, with 17 RC alumnae who also graduated from Kobe College. Played a key role in Charter Day by reporting live via Skype from Kobe.
Mary Ashby Cheek Award – Given to a past or present non-alumni member of the Rockford College community for enriching the College experience of many by exemplifying the ideals of the College. One award may be given each year.
- Michael Griffith Project director for a grant that enabled 123 students to earn bi-lingual certification. Currently assists with the Library of Congress Teaching with Primary Sources program at Rockford College, supporting teachers as they incorporate primary-source material.
