||The Music Academy of Rockford University's approach to early childhood music education is based on the child’s instinctive and joyful love of music. In the early years, children are innately alive to and aware of music.|
The Music for the Young Child curriculum is vocally-based, as we believe children must use the voice as their first and primary instrument and is influenced by the methodologies of Kodaly, Orff, Suzuki and Gordon. We encourage children to sing and play with sound and music and to become physically involved in musical play. The curriculum allows us to introduce music concepts experimentally, and then, as children mature, to begin to develop a cognitive awareness of music. We are conscious that music has the ability to facilitate language acquisition, reading readiness and intellectual development. The materials are carefully chosen to foster joy and excitement in learning.
Children 6 months to 6 years attend class with a "caregiver,” who may be a parent, grandparent, or anyone who regularly interacts with the child. Our goal is to provide the caregiver with a repertoire of songs and teach the child. We know children learn to love the music they hear in their homes and therefore, a further goal is to encourage singing and listening to music in the home.
The Prelude program is offered this fall on Tuesday mornings on the campus of Rockford College and on Saturday mornings at Emmanuel Lutheran Church.
Love Notes is for children six months to three years of age. Finger play, counting games, vocalization, bounces, tickles and listening experiences build musical and social skills and promote bonding between child and partner.
Kinder Kalliope is for children three to four years of age. The child and partner sing, move to, create and listen to simple chants and songs from a variety of cultures. Parents are encouraged to use music to make learning a joyful, joint and ongoing experience.
Kinder Singers is for children four to six years of age. At this age, children are more ready for precise musical and language acquisition activities. We begin listening for rhythmic patterns, matching pitches, and learning songs where pitch, rhythm, rhyme, melody and tone color are combined in an art form and in an approach to learning to read. The parent is an observer.
All Together Now! A Family Camp is for children aged zero months to 6 years and their caregivers. "All Together Now!” is a versatile, mixed-age curricula developed by Music Academy artist/teachers and early childhood education specialists. Spend a couple hours a day playing with art and music and come away with a repertoire of music, games, activities to keep little hands and minds busy! A delightful week of immersion in music and summer fun for families offered in August!
